Type of Conflict: Man vs. Environment

Describe the main conflict:
I think that main conflict is man vs. environment because since the water from the fountain works but doesn’t last it means that it isn’t meant to be and that’s whatMr. Medbourne, Colonel Killigrew, Mr. Gascoigne and Widow Wycherly are hoping wouldn’t happen but that it would last.

Describe the Climax of the Story:
When the four guest’s drank the water from the Fountain of Youth and began to feel youthful again.

How does the Protagonist change over the course of the story?
Dr. Heidegger’s, he changes by his thoughts about the “position” he gave his guest’s
and the four other’s change because they started the story believing that the position couldn’t make the rose lively again. By the end they believed it could because they experienced it their selves

Describe the relationship between the title and the theme.
The ‘’main idea’’ is that if you drink water from the Fountain of Youth you will become young again. This relates to the title because that’s Dr. Heidegger’s experiment to see if the was from the fountain will actually work.

The main conflict, Mr. Medbourne, Colonel Killigrew, Mr. Gascoigne and Widow Wycherly
wanting the water to work, helps to provide information for Dr. Heidegger’s experiment.

The climax is an important part of the theme. The point at which the experiment begins, them drinking of the water and the theme which is he whole experiment.

Give examples of each of the following literary terms in the story (use quotes):

Simile:
“One limped across the floor, like a gouty grandfather”

Metaphor:
“The ancient flower seemed ready to crumble to dust in the doctor’s hands.”

Personification:
“The skeleton rattled in its close, the picture of the young lady had stepped one foot upon the floor, and several ghastly faces had peeped forth from the mirror; while the brazen head of a Hippocrates frowned, and said --- “Forbear!”

Symbol:
The rose, starts out crippled representing the old people and once it has some of the water it becomes beautiful again.

Foreshadowing (give both elements):
When the rose fell out of the vase, when it broke, and the rose started to turn back to when it was pressed between the pages in the book. “My poor Sylvia’s rose!” cried Dr. Heidegger, holding it in the light of the sunset clouds; “it appears to be fading again.” And so it was. Even while the party were looking for it the flower continued up, till it became dry and fragile as when the doctor had it first thrown it into the vase.”

Irony:
Wife dying on their wedding day.

Imagery:
‘It was scarcely full-brown; for some of its delicate red leaves curled dewdrops around its moist bosom, within which two or three dewdrops were sparkling”

Describe the relationships between the class theme and the story.
A quality of humanity is curiousness, I think this story has a ton of it in it, you’d have to be curious and wonder if the water from the fountain would actually work to try it.

RESPONDING

1. He conducted this experiment first to find out if the water from the Fountain of Youth works but also to see if people with bad experiences from their youth would make the same mistakes.

2. They all have had a tough life when they were younger and once they had taken some of the water they all started to make mistakes.

3. He would drink any because he wouldn’t want to make the same mistakes and probably live that much longer without his wife.

4. Dr. Heidegger is the narrator. Since the doctor is the narrator and doing the person doing the experiment he will be able to tell what happens during the experiment so he will be able to be sure of the facts.

5. That when your young you make mistakes and as you age you have to live with your decisions, and I do agree with else points.

7. I don’t think that this is desirable at all. At least for me, I wouldn’t want to live that long. Even though you would gain lots of knowledge for future generations and have many experiences. I don’t think anybody could live without there friends and family.
